Solar and batteries on the Gold Coast: where homes are adding them, units, and 2026 prices

The short answer

Gold Coast homes added about 12,900 batteries from July 2025 to August 2026, averaging 30.3 kWh usable, bigger than the Queensland average (Clean Energy Regulator). New solar systems here average 11.6 kW. 10 kW of solar costs about $8,000 to $11,500, and 6.6 kW with a 15 kWh battery about $13,500 to $23,000, installed after the federal rebates (October 2026).

Which Gold Coast suburbs are adding the most batteries?

The growth corridor in the north. Postcodes 4208, 4209, 4210, 4211, 4212 (Ormeau, Coomera and Pimpama, Oxenford, Nerang, Helensvale and Hope Island) added 5,586 batteries from July 2025 to August 2026, against 2,738 along the beachside strip from Southport to Coolangatta. Much of the corridor is newer detached homes, with room on the roof and in the garage.

Why Gold Coast systems are bigger

A new Gold Coast solar system averages 11.6 kW, against 10.7 kW across Queensland, and the batteries average 30.3 kWh against 28.8 kWh. Pools, ducted air conditioning and electric cars all push a home's use up. Bigger isn't automatically better: size it on your bills. Our battery size guide shows how.

At Southport, each kW of north-facing panels makes about 1,630 kWh a year on NREL's PVWatts model, and least in June. The typical new 11.6 kW system makes about 41 kWh on an average June day.

Solar for units, townhouses and high-rises

The beach strip has many units and high-rises. Surfers Paradise (4217) has 4,854 solar systems registered since 2001. In a unit or townhouse the roof is usually common property, so the body corporate has to agree before panels go on it. What helps:

  • a townhouse with its own roof section and its own meter can often have its own system, once the body corporate says yes;
  • in a high-rise, solar is usually a building project for the common areas (lifts, lights, pool pumps), decided at a general meeting;
  • a battery can sometimes go in your own garage or courtyard even where the roof is shared: ask before you buy.

Near the beach, salt air matters too: ask for panels tested for salt mist (IEC 61701), mounting rated for a coastal site, and any warranty conditions for homes close to the sea.

What does solar cost on the Gold Coast?

Gold Coast prices follow south-east Queensland (October 2026, installed, after the federal rebates, GST included): 10 kW of solar costs about $8,000 to $11,500 and 13 kW about $10,000 to $15,000; 6.6 kW with a 15 kWh battery is about $13,500 to $23,000. A double-storey roof, a switchboard upgrade or a tiled roof can add to it. The full table is in our guide to solar and batteries in Brisbane.

What rebates can Gold Coast homes get?

The Gold Coast is in STC zone 3, so the federal solar rebate is about $1,665 on a 6.6 kW system, and the federal battery rebate about $3,663 on a 15 kWh battery, if installed now; both fall from 1 January 2027. They're already taken off the prices above. There's no Queensland Government solar or battery program open to homeowners right now. Power prices and free midday power on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is on the Energex network. On the 2026-27 default offer a kWh costs about 28c and a typical feed-in tariff pays about 4c. The whole coast is in the Solar Sharer area: larger retailers offer free power 11am to 2pm, up to 24 kWh a day, with a smart meter, which can top up a battery on a cloudy day. Compare the whole plan, not just the free hours: the Solar Sharer Offer.
