Solar and batteries in Cairns: prices, rebates and what the tropics change
The short answer
As of October 2026, 6.6 kW of solar typically costs about $4,500 to $8,500 installed in Queensland after the federal rebate; Far North Queensland can cost a little more for travel and cyclone-rated mounting. Each kW of panels in Cairns makes about 1,550 kWh a year, with the wet season (not winter) the weakest time. Regional Queensland's regulated power prices are capped by the south-east Queensland default offer, and the regional feed-in tariff is 6.006c a kWh for 2026-27.

What rebates can Cairns homes get?
Cairns is in STC zone 3, so the federal solar rebate is about $1,665 on a 6.6 kW system, and the federal battery rebate about $3,663 on a 15 kWh battery, if installed now; both fall from 1 January 2027. They're already taken off the prices above. There's no Queensland Government solar or battery program open to homeowners right now. Every program, who qualifies and how to claim it: solar and battery rebates in Queensland.

How much power does solar make in Cairns?
Each kW of panels in Cairns makes about 1,550 kWh a year (PVWatts, panels facing north at 20°). The pattern is different from the south: the best month is September, at about 155 kWh, and the weakest is March, at about 115, in the wet season, when cloud cuts output more than winter does. A 6.6 kW system makes about 10,500 kWh a year. If you're sizing a battery, it's the cloudy wet-season run that tests it.
Power prices and feed-in tariffs in Cairns
Cairns is in regional Queensland, where electricity prices are set by the Queensland Competition Authority. Under the state's uniform tariff policy, the regulated prices are capped by the south-east Queensland default offer, so a typical Cairns bill on the main tariff (tariff 11) is no higher than in Brisbane, and the QCA expects it to be about 6.9% lower in 2026-27 than last year (QCA). The regional solar feed-in tariff is 6.006c a kWh (QCA), more than the 4c typical rate we use for south-east Queensland, but still far less than the power you'd otherwise buy. Your bill shows your own rates; enter them in the savings calculator.
The Solar Sharer Offer (free midday power) covers south-east Queensland only, so it isn't offered in Cairns.
What the tropics change
- Cyclones. Cairns is in a cyclone region, so panels, rails and fixings must be rated for the local wind loads. Your installer designs for your site; ask what the mounting is rated to.
- Heat and humidity. Batteries are rated for an operating temperature range, and some warranties now set heat limits, so where the battery goes matters: shaded, ventilated, out of direct sun. Check the warranty of the battery you're offered (for example, Sungrow's 2026 warranty).
- Wet-season cloud. Output dips in the wet season, so size solar and a battery for those months, not only the dry-season peak.
