Sungrow SBH and SBR batteries: sizes, backup, warranty and VPPs (2026)
The short answer
High-voltage batteries that connect on the DC side of a Sungrow hybrid inverter (SH RS single-phase or SH T three-phase). The inverter runs the solar, the battery and backup. Sizes: SBH: 15 to 40 kWh in 5 kWh modules (SBH150 to SBH400), up to 4 stacks in parallel. SBR: 6.4 to 25.6 kWh in 3.2 kWh modules. The warranty is 10 years; at least 70% of capacity at 10 years, with unlimited cycles for daily self-consumption and backup. It's on the approved list for the federal battery rebate (about $3,663 on 15 kWh if installed now), and Amber SmartShift, AGL VPP, Origin (Loop) and GloBird ZEROHERO VPP list it. Facts from Sungrow's Australian datasheets and warranty, checked 15 October 2026.
What the Sungrow SBH and SBR batteries is
High-voltage batteries that connect on the DC side of a Sungrow hybrid inverter (SH RS single-phase or SH T three-phase). The inverter runs the solar, the battery and backup. It's imported and supported in Australia by Sungrow Australia Group Pty Ltd (North Sydney).
Sizes and power
| Sizes | SBH: 15 to 40 kWh in 5 kWh modules (SBH150 to SBH400), up to 4 stacks in parallel. SBR: 6.4 to 25.6 kWh in 3.2 kWh modules. |
|---|---|
| Modules | SBH 5 kWh modules; SBR 3.2 kWh modules |
| Phases | Single-phase (SH5.0/6.0RS, SH8.0/10RS) and three-phase (SH5–10T, SH15–25T) hybrid inverters. |
| Power | Set by the inverter: about 6.6 kW of battery power on the SH5.0/6.0RS, 10 kW on the SH8.0/10RS, and 5 or 10 kW discharge on the SH5T/SH10T. |
| Build | LFP, IP55, indoor or outdoor, floor-standing; charges from 0 °C and discharges from −20 °C, up to 50 °C. |
Can you add a Sungrow battery to existing solar?
Sungrow describes its SH8.0/10RS as suited to retrofits. How your existing inverter would stay connected depends on your system: ask the installer. See adding a battery to existing solar.
How does Sungrow blackout backup work?
Backup is built into the hybrid inverter. The SH8.0/10RS offers whole-home backup, and the three-phase SH5T/SH10T has a built-in 63 A bypass for whole-home backup; switch-over is under 10 ms on the inverters that state it.
What warranty does a Sungrow battery have?
The Sungrow battery warranty is 10 years; at least 70% of capacity at 10 years, with unlimited cycles for daily self-consumption and backup.
- Other uses (or a mix that includes them) are capped at about 2.8 MWh per kWh, e.g. 56 MWh for an SBH200.
- New in version 9.0 (May 2026): the performance warranty assumes the battery doesn't sit in high heat for long periods each year (limits on days above 35 °C and 40 °C), so the installation spot matters.
- The system must be monitored in Sungrow's iSolarCloud; without complete data, Sungrow honours at least 4 years.

Which virtual power plants work with Sungrow?
| VPP | Sungrow |
|---|---|
| Amber SmartShift | Yes |
| AGL VPP | Yes |
| Origin (Loop) | Yes |
| ENGIE VPP | Not listed |
| GloBird ZEROHERO VPP | Yes |
- Amber supports one Sungrow SH hybrid inverter per site (SH5.0/6.0/8.0/10RS, SH5.0/10RT and SH10T–25T), not systems with two hybrids.
- Origin's list doesn't include the SBH200; it does list the other SBH and SBR sizes.
- ENGIE's main VPP page didn't list Sungrow on 15 October 2026.
- Western Australia: On Synergy's Supported Solutions List as provisional (not yet ready for its VPP) on 1 October 2026; not on Horizon Power's battery list.

How much is the battery rebate on a Sungrow battery?
The federal battery rebate on a Sungrow battery depends on its usable size and the installation date: it's the same for every approved brand of the same usable size. SBH (SBH100–400) and SBR batteries are on the Clean Energy Council approved list. Your installer checks the battery is listed on the day it's installed.
| Usable size | Installed now | From 1 January 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | $2,516 | $2,109 |
| 15 kWh | $3,663 | $3,071 |
| 20 kWh | $4,403 | $3,700 |
| 30 kWh | $5,698 | $4,773 |
Estimates at an STC value of $37. More: the solar battery rebate.
How much does a Sungrow battery cost?
A Sungrow battery's price depends on the size, the inverter and your home more than the badge. Across brands, most homes pay about $700 to $850 per kWh installed after the federal rebate (October 2026); large modular batteries can be lower. See solar battery cost, or get a price for your home.
Who it suits, and what to check
It suits:
- Homes that want a widely installed system with one inverter for solar, battery and backup
- Larger batteries: SBH stacks go to 40 kWh, and up to 4 can run in parallel
- Heavy daily cycling for self-consumption, which the warranty doesn't cap
Check before you buy:
- Where the battery goes: the warranty now has heat limits
- That the inverter size suits the battery power you want (the inverter caps it)
- Which VPP you want: ENGIE didn't list Sungrow when we checked
