WA battery rebate 2026: Synergy or Horizon Power, and what you get
The short answer
As of 21 October 2026, the WA Residential Battery Scheme pays $130 per usable kWh for Synergy customers, up to $1,300, and $380 per usable kWh for Horizon Power customers, up to $3,800. Only the first 10 kWh counts. You join a virtual power plant, an approved vendor applies for you and takes it off your quote, and it comes on top of the federal battery rebate.
What is the WA Residential Battery Scheme?
It's a WA Government scheme, run by Energy Policy WA, that takes money off a new home battery for households that join their retailer's virtual power plant (VPP). It started on 1 July 2025 and, the WA Government says, it is open now and runs until all 100,000 planned rebates have been paid. The scheme also offers no-interest loans of up to $10,000 for households with a gross income under $210,000.
How much you get depends on one thing: who supplies your electricity. Synergy customers get one rate and Horizon Power customers a much higher one.
How much is the rebate for Synergy and Horizon Power customers?
- Synergy customers: $130 per kWh of usable capacity, up to $1,300.
- Horizon Power customers: $380 per kWh of usable capacity, up to $3,800.
The eligibility rules pay on usable capacity up to 10 kWh, so any battery of 10 kWh or more gets the full amount. It has to be at least 5 kWh usable to qualify. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate is separate and comes off as well:
| Battery | Synergy customer | Horizon Power customer | Federal rebate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh | $650 | $1,900 | about $1,258 |
| 8 kWh | $1,040 | $3,040 | about $1,998 |
| 10 kWh | $1,300 | $3,800 | about $2,516 |
| 13.5 kWh | $1,300 | $3,800 | about $3,367 |
| 16 kWh | $1,300 | $3,800 | about $3,811 |
| 20 kWh | $1,300 | $3,800 | about $4,403 |
The federal figures are estimates for a battery installed now, at an assumed certificate value; they step down over time, by installation date. Our battery rebate calculator works out both for your size.
Am I a Synergy or Horizon Power customer?
Your power bill says who your retailer is. As a rule, homes on the main South West grid, from Perth and Mandurah to the South West, the Wheatbelt, the Great Southern and the Goldfields around Kalgoorlie, buy their power from Synergy. Horizon Power supplies regional and remote towns off that grid, in the Pilbara, the Kimberley, the Gascoyne, parts of the Mid West and around Esperance, for example Broome, Karratha, Port Hedland, Carnarvon, Exmouth, Kununurra and Esperance.
On Homerise, your postcode sets the rate: a Horizon Power town gets the Horizon Power rate, and everywhere else in WA the Synergy rate. In a few areas where homes can be on either network, the price uses the Synergy rate and your installer confirms which one applies to you.
Who's eligible?
- You're 18 or over, a permanent resident, and a Synergy or Horizon Power customer.
- The home is a residential property in WA with an ongoing internet connection. Renters need the owner's written consent.
- The battery and inverter are new, able to join a VPP, and on the approved product lists (Synergy's or Horizon Power's supported list, and the Clean Energy Council's).
- It's sold by an approved vendor from the scheme's vendor directory and installed by an electrician with battery accreditation.
- One rebate per property, and systems bought before 1 July 2025 don't qualify.
Do I have to join a virtual power plant?
Yes. The rebate is only for households that join a VPP and sign its contract. Synergy customers can join Synergy's VPP or an approved alternative; Horizon Power customers join Horizon Power's. During VPP events the retailer can use some of your battery, and it pays you under its own terms. Read the VPP's contract before you sign: it sets how long you're in and how much of the battery it can use. How virtual power plants work.
How do I claim it?
You don't claim it yourself. Your approved vendor submits the application for you, and the rebate is usually taken off your battery's price up front: the scheme pays the vendor directly. Once an application is conditionally approved, the installation has to be finished within six months, or you apply again.
On Homerise, an installer who is an approved vendor takes the WA rebate off your preliminary price, marked with an asterisk: they confirm you're eligible before you sign. With other installers it shows as a possible extra, not in the price.
Can I get the WA rebate and the federal rebate?
Yes. They stack. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount comes off as well, and your installer claims it for you too. See every WA program and solar and batteries in Perth.
Questions people ask
