Power plans, VPPs and retailers
Which batteries work with which VPP? Amber, AGL, Origin, ENGIE and GloBird (2026)
The short answer
Every on-grid battery claiming the federal rebate must be able to join a virtual power plant, but each VPP only accepts certain brands and models. On the providers' own lists (checked 15 October 2026), Sigenergy and Alpha ESS were accepted by all five we checked (Amber SmartShift, AGL, Origin, ENGIE and GloBird); Sungrow and Tesla Powerwall 3 by four; GoodWe, Fox ESS and Anker by three or four, some in beta. Check your exact battery and inverter models with the provider before you buy.
The compatibility table
| Battery | Amber SmartShift | AGL VPP | Origin (Loop) | ENGIE VPP | GloBird ZEROHERO VPP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sigenergy SigenStor | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Sungrow SBH and SBR batteries | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Yes |
| GoodWe ESA and Lynx Home batteries | Beta | Not listed | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
| Fox ESS EQ and EP batteries, and the Power Cube | Beta | Not listed | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Alpha ESS SMILE batteries | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Anker SOLIX X1 | Beta | Not listed | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not listed |
“Beta” means a beta program. Lists name specific inverter and battery models, and they change often.
Does the battery rebate need a VPP-ready battery?
Yes. The government's rule: on-grid battery systems, including the inverter, need the technical capability to take part in a VPP to be eligible for the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate. You don't have to join one, and joining later needs an internet connection and sometimes an upgrade. (DCCEEW, Clean Energy Regulator.)
What does each VPP offer?
Each VPP sets its own payments and conditions. As published on 15 October 2026:
- Amber SmartShift: Amber passes wholesale prices through and SmartShift trades your battery against them. Amber's help centre lists a $25 a month subscription, no lock-in and no exit fee; Amber must be your retailer. Available in VIC, NSW, SA, south-east Queensland (Energex) and the ACT. See Amber with a home battery.
- AGL VPP: a $200 welcome credit, $80 a year, and $1 per kWh during VPP events, with battery use capped at 250 kWh a year; NSW, VIC, QLD and SA; you need an AGL electricity plan; a 12-month renewing term, cancellable on 30 days' notice with no exit fee.
- Origin (Loop, Battery Lite): a $200 sign-up credit and $1 per kWh sent to the grid during Loop events, up to 200 kWh a year, on top of your feed-in tariff; NSW, SA, VIC, QLD and the ACT; Origin electricity and at least 5 kW of solar; no lock-in.
- ENGIE VPP: monthly bill credits (amounts shown after its eligibility form) and up to 400 kWh of battery use a year; it needs a 5 to 15 kW solar inverter and at least 10 kWh of battery; the sign-up credit varies by state and isn't offered in QLD or WA.
- GloBird ZEROHERO VPP: part of GloBird's ZEROHERO plan: $1 for each day you import almost nothing from 6 to 9pm, evening exports topped up to 10c a kWh (up to 15 kWh a day), and $1 per kWh exported in critical peaks; no lock-in.
- Western Australia: the WA Residential Battery Scheme requires joining a VPP. Synergy customers need a battery shown as VPP-ready on Synergy's Supported Solutions List; Horizon Power customers join Horizon's own program.
VPP payments are modest next to what a battery saves on your bill, and some plans charge more for power in other ways, so compare the whole plan. What VPPs pay, and what a $0 bill really takes: virtual power plants.
How do you choose a battery for a VPP?
To choose a battery for a VPP, check these before you buy:
- Check your exact battery and inverter models on the provider's list, not just the brand.
- Ask how much of the battery the VPP can use, and the backup reserve it keeps for you.
- Check whether you can leave without a fee, and whether your battery app is locked while you're enrolled.
- In NSW, joining a VPP can earn a state incentive; see NSW rebates.
Questions people ask
Do I have to join a VPP to get the battery rebate?
No. The battery must be able to join a VPP, but joining is optional. In WA, the state battery scheme does require joining a VPP.
